Interpeak Initiates Protection Profile for Trusted Stacks to Meet MILS Requirements

Stockholm, Sweden - 2006-02-10

Interpeak, a pioneer of Internet and secure networking software for embedded systems, announced its plan to write a protection profile for its secure and trusted protocol stacks. The protection profile is a part of Interpeak's Trusted Stack initiative.

The Secure and Trusted Stack Protection Profile (STS-PP) specifies the security and functional assurance requirements for a class of IPv6 networking. A stack evaluated against this Protection Profile serves as a trusted foundation in security critical and complex applications. In order to work in tandem with embedded designs based on MILS (Multiple Independent Layers of Security/Safety) architecture, an IPv6 stack must meet the rigorous Information Assurance (IA) requirements of the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP).

A MILS-based architecture design is used for creating secure systems, predominantly in the military and aerospace markets, in which data is compartmentalized. The design relies on a separation kernel, which ensures the control of information flow, and establishes and maintains trusted delivery, trusted recovery and audit capabilities.

Interpeak outlined this initiative for members of The Open Group last month, at an Open Group meeting in Barcelona, Spain. Interpeak discussed complete details and product roadmaps for a High Assurance IPv6 networking stack with no foreign code or influence. Work on this program has already commenced; key accomplishments thus far include membership in The Open Group and the start of the protection profile. The company will collaborate with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) system integrators and the Open Group during the design and implementation of these products.

"Interpeak is honored to join the roster of members of The Open Group," commented Johan Fornaeus, Interpeak's CEO. "The consortium provides an unbiased perspective and offers a litmus test for proposed security and networking standards. We look forward to leveraging the group's collective experience and knowledge as we work towards our protection profile."

About the Open Group
The Open Group is a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium, which works towards enabling access to integrated information within and between enterprises based on open standards and global interoperability. With more than 200 member organizations and 6,000 participants, the Open Group provides a range of services to its members, other consortia, and government agencies, including strategy, management, innovation and research, certification services, and standards services. Its role is to capture, understand and address current and emerging requirements, establish policies and share best practices; to facilitate interoperability, develop consensus, and evolve and integrate specifications and open source technologies; to offer a comprehensive set of services to enhance the operational efficiency of consortia; and to operate the industry's premier certification service.
